You can get extremely granular, for instance asking your phone not just to open the screen reader, but to increase zoom or even switch your phone’s display over to grayscale. If it’s an option in One UI, odds are you can change it with your voice. For one, the attacker must have direct line of sight to the targeted device. And for another, the light in many cases must be precisely aimed at a very specific part of the microphone.
Google Assistant did about as well as Alexa in my test, though the Google AI nicely offered to explain how online ordering worked before having me jump in. Not only was it able to add both paper towels and a copy of Destiny 2 to my shopping cart, but it also told me my order qualified for free shipping. But then, it stuck me in a loop of accepting terms of service, and I could complete the order only via the Google Assistant app. Google Assistant could likewise handle my requests for showtimes at my nearby theaters, but it, too, eventually sent me back to the phone to complete my purchase via my choice of movie-ticket apps.

Siri lets you move audio and video with Google-like commands, simply relying on the AirPlay framework instead of Google Cast. The services offered by Samsung aren’t as numerous or as popular as Google’s, however. And Bixby is intended exclusively for Samsung devices, whereas Google Assistant can run on just about anything with Android, Chrome, Wear OS, or its iPhone/iPad app. As with some of the other offerings on our list, the app also has a built-in timer function, letting you create the best schedule to suit your needs.

But while the Google Assistant only works with about one-third as many smart devices as Alexa, that number has been growing rapidly. Even though Abby and I both have iPhones and MacBooks, I haven’t had any issues primarily using Google Assistant and Google smart devices in our house. These apps act as the central “hub” for controlling devices. You can create rooms, then manage all of the devices within each room.
For example, if you have an iPhone, getting a HomePod smart speaker might make more sense for you. Or, if you already use YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Calendar, then choosing the Google Assistant is a good idea. Finally, if you are mostly using a smart assistant for controlling your smart home devices, then Alexa is probably the best choice for you. They require little rephrasing of commands or repetition of questions. In this option, they can remain active for a few more seconds after replying to your first query.

Of course Siri is going to work better for making calls and texts on a phone compared to anything on a smart speaker. Why not use Google and Alexa on a phone for this test instead? Smart home devices have become some of the most important places for integration with virtual assistants; all three platforms have focused some time and attention on this. All three assistants work with a huge breadth of connected products, and many third-party products work with at least two, if not all three, platforms. We use Spotify to manage our music and playlists, and it works well with the Google Assistant and our Google smart speakers. It seems like most online comparisons of the three common voice assistants focus heavily on which assistant gives the most helpful and accurate answers. Establishments with online food ordering options are increasing. None of the four assistants can place orders online for now.
